The Phillips Foundation: Practical impact measurement

The Phillips Foundation needed to know if their partnerships were working but not through a process that felt extractive or to place on a leader board. The solution required putting communities in control of their own data.

The brief

Work with Giving Connect to help The Phillips Foundation measure the impact of their partnerships. For the Foundation, measurement is learning and insights provide clarity for better decisions. The process needed to respect and accommodate the very specific local contexts partners work in, from Africa to Australia.

Outcomes achieved

  • High-quality, actionable data collected across diverse international communities by the young people the initiatives serve
  • Insights revealed nuanced patterns and opportunities to strengthen impact
  • In-country partners built confidence and capacity to gather, interpret, and apply data for future decisions
  • Communities had ownership of the data collection process and the insights, fostering trust and sustainable engagement

What we learned

When data collection is designed as a learning process sensitive to context, people, and emotion it generates actionable insights while strengthening local capacity and trust.
